Simple Pleasures
It is snowing, snowing, and snowing. Yippee!
Today's drive home from school was interesting. I merged on to the highway behind two snow plows side-by-side and they pretty much escorted me the 8 miles home. It made it much easier than it would have been. I have decided two things about the phrase they have on their mud flaps: STAY BACK STAY ALIVE!
a) it delights me.
That phrase makes me laugh just like the personal danger pictures of an unidentified human having some horrible thing happen to them. My very favorite was the picture on the motor of our ski boat, where the man's leg is being severed, but is still slightly connected and is at a perfect right degree angle. I was also very excited about the new 'walk' symbol that most stop lights now have. The person is a very enthusiatic walker this time around.
b) it is decidedly very un-Minnesotan. (They are not fucking around here.)
In MN it can be dangerous to say anything very enthusiastically, not to mention, in such a pointed fashion. Most Minnesotans get very flustered and may not know just what to say. Oh, well. Oh, my. We don't usually talk about THOSE things.
So watch out folks- Stay Back Stay Alive could soon be in a neighborhood near you.
And it might be scary.

I think you're on to something with "it is decidedly un-Minnesotan". If you've driven on the Canadian highways you might have seen signs like the following (which where quite jarring to me):
"Speed kills. Slow down!"
"Fatigue kills. Take a break!"
